I started to get into anime in the early 90’s when the Sci-Fi channel used to run it’s “Saturday Anime” block uhm, on Saturdays. Dominion: Tank Police, Vampire Hunter D, Project A-ko, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star. Man, I used to take my Mom’s lame VHS tapes and record over them every Saturday. It’s not like she watched Gone with the Wind or Casablanca that often anyway so it’s cool.
Anyway, from that point on I was heavily into anime.
That’s probably not a surprise considering the fact that I’ve created an EP dedicated to late anime director Satoshi Kon, I’ve referenced films on tracks and occasionally chopped up samples for songs (like the remix to The Cry from Within feat. Vast Aire, Breez Evahflowin, Krohme, LMNO & C-Rayz Walz.)
Also not a surprise, my favorite will always be Akira.
It wasn’t the first anime film I watched but it was definitely the best. For me it was the complex story, unprecedented level of detail in the animation, the unique score, the insane pace and crazy energy and the raw, visceral images that were unlike anything else that I had seen before.
I probably have every copy of Akira released, from laserdisc to Blu-Ray, the manga (I highly recommend), books, animation cells, all of that cool stuff.
What still impresses me is how closely the anime matches the manga in terms of style, quality and technical detail. Otomo created a masterpiece on paper that somehow also became a masterpiece on film.
Anyway, I’ll admit that it’s been a minute since I’ve watched any new anime so do me a favor and leave your personal favorite flick in the comments section below.
