Myth No More: Buried E.T. Atari Cartridges Recovered

As part of a documentary, a team proposed a plan to excavate a dump in Alamogordo, NM that was allegedly the dumping ground for thousands of Atari cartridges.

Among them the worst game of all time, 1982’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, a massive failure for Atari that resulted in the burial of over 700,000 cartridges.

Never confirmed by Atari, it was considered one of gaming’s biggest urban legends until now … they found ’em!

On March 28, the team unearthed the lost Atari carts and not just E.T. but also about 700 other titles including: Yars’ Revenge, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Centipede, Warlords and others.

No word yet on what they plan on doing with the games but if they ever go up on eBay, I’m buying a stinky copy of dump E.T.
