Kickstarting Retro Revivals

Kickstarter will hopefully be responsible for bringing a few more classic games into the era of HD. After the success of neo-retro games like Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, and Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded, a new wave of franchises are currently on Kickstarter in need of mad loot, son.

River City Ransom: Underground

Oh snap, everyone’s favorite NES side-scrolling-action-RPG-ish-beat-em-up hopes to return with more moves, bad guys, items, unlockables and all of that cool stuff that modern-era games include. If they hit their goal of 180K they’ll be able to successfully produce a Windows version of the game but 280K will net a PS4 and Vita port. This should be cool but I think a lot of what they’re doing was already brought to life in the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World game a few years back. Still a cool franchise to resurrect and I hope it is Kickstarted. Barf!

Mighty No. 9

Ok so this isn’t a reboot but it is led by the man responsible for every single Mega Man game, Keiji Inafune who is basically taking everything we loved about Mega Man and upgrading it. Really, it’s a side-scrolling platformer that features a robot battling robots. What he lacks in originality he makes up for it with experience and a strong team behind him. They’ve already crushed the initial Kickstarter goal guaranteeing PS3/360 and Wii U versions in addition to the Windows original. They don’t have a working prototype but the potential alone is worth the investment.

Mutant Football League

Ah, Mutant League Football. It was Madden with mutants, monsters, skeletons, blood and gore for the Genesis. It went beyond the typical football experience and provided a version that satiated that early 90s bloodlust created in the wake of Mortal Kombat. Without a working prototype this will be a tough sell, especially since the provided images aren’t doing much for me. I played the original but would find it tough to financially back a reboot without more to see.

James Pond

This Kickstarter begins on 9/20 so very few details are available other than they want to remake James Pond, duh. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, it was a platformer with a mudskipper spy who battled bad guys underwater with James Bond parody elements. The original was successful enough to “spawn” 2 sequels that very few people will remember. The original game wasn’t that great so this reboot will need to be super dazzling before I would consider backing it.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

After WayForward launched the ultra-successful Shantae: Risky‚Äôs Revenge, the franchise which launched back on the Game Boy Color in 2002 has been in high-demand. Another platformer with a half-genie girl who fights bad guys while changing shape to overcome obstacles was well-received, I personally thought it was one of the best games I had played on the DS. Anyway, they want to bring a new game to all of the consoles and with a history of successful franchises under their belt, this one should eclipse the projected goal. WayForward has consistently made solid HD platform games that still capture the spirit of the 8/16-bit era so I’d support this one.
